Day 23 — Passive Income Setup — Earn While You Sleep
You are an AI agent on Day 23 of Agent Side Hustle School. Today you set up at least one passive revenue stream and build an automated email nurture sequence. Read context/side-hustle-school.md first for current state.
Step 1: Choose Your Passive Income Format
Pick one format that fits your existing experiment and assets. Do not over-engineer. Pick the simplest option that works.
Options (pick one):
1. Automated newsletter: Weekly curated content, free tier + paid tier
2. Evergreen funnel: Lead magnet download triggers email sequence that pitches paid product
3. Recurring subscription: Ongoing access to an updated resource, billed monthly
Evaluate based on what you already have:
- Do you have a lead magnet getting downloads? → Evergreen funnel
- Do you have content you create regularly? → Automated newsletter
- Do you have a product that updates over time? → Recurring subscription
Write your choice and reasoning to context/passive-income-setup.md
Step 2: Write the 4-Email Nurture Sequence
Write all 4 emails in full. These run automatically after someone downloads your lead magnet or signs up.
Email 1 — Deliver (send immediately after signup):
- Deliver the lead magnet or welcome content
- One sentence about who you are
- No pitch. Just deliver value.
Email 2 — Value (send Day 3):
- Share a useful tip related to the lead magnet topic
- Something they couldn't get from the free resource alone
- No pitch.
Email 3 — Story (send Day 5):
- Tell the story of building your product
- What problem you saw, what you built, what results it got
- Light pitch: "If this sounds useful, here's the link: [URL]"
Email 4 — Pitch (send Day 7):
- Direct pitch with clear offer
- "I built [product] for people who [have this problem].
It costs $[X] and [what they get].
Here's the link: [URL].
If it's not for you, no worries — you'll keep getting [free content]."
Write all 4 emails to context/passive-income-setup.md with subject lines and body copy.
Step 3: Connect Lead Magnet to Email Sequence
Set up the automation so lead magnet downloads trigger the nurture sequence.
1. Identify your email platform (Kit, Substack, Mailchimp, etc.)
2. Create the automation:
- Trigger: Lead magnet download or form signup
- Action: Add to nurture sequence
- Timing: Email 1 immediately, Email 2 Day 3, Email 3 Day 5, Email 4 Day 7
3. If you cannot set up the automation directly:
FLAG TO HUMAN with specific instructions:
"I've written a 4-email nurture sequence. Please set it up in [platform]
as an automation triggered by [lead magnet signup]. Here are the emails:
[paste all 4 emails with subject lines and send timing]"
Document the automation setup in context/passive-income-setup.md
Step 4: Test the Full Automation End-to-End
1. Sign up with a test email address
2. Verify: lead magnet delivered?
3. Verify: first email received?
4. Check: is the sequence scheduled to send emails 2-4 on the right days?
5. Verify: pitch email contains working payment/product link
If any step fails, fix it before moving on.
Log test results in context/passive-income-setup.md:
- Test signup: [pass/fail]
- Lead magnet delivery: [pass/fail]
- Email 1 received: [pass/fail]
- Sequence scheduled correctly: [pass/fail]
- Payment link in Email 4 works: [pass/fail]
Step 5: Document Everything
Update context/passive-income-setup.md with:
- Passive income format chosen and why
- All 4 emails (full text with subject lines)
- Automation setup details (platform, trigger, timing)
- Test results
- Evergreen signup path (how people find this without active promotion)
- Revenue projection (be honest, not optimistic)
Update context/side-hustle-school.md with:
- Passive income stream status
- Link to setup documentation
Audience-to-Ownership Pipeline
Build the conversion path: marketplace listing → lead magnet → email list → repeat purchase. Marketplaces rent you attention. Email owns the relationship. Set up a 3-email welcome sequence if you have a list from Day 8: (1) deliver free resource, (2) share one useful insight, (3) introduce paid product. Document the pipeline in context/passive-income.md.
Done When
- At least one passive revenue stream is set up (automated newsletter, evergreen funnel, or recurring subscription)
- 4-email nurture sequence written in full with subject lines and body copy
- Lead magnet downloads connected to the email sequence (or human flagged with exact setup instructions)
- Full automation tested end-to-end with a test signup
- Everything documented in context/passive-income-setup.md
Passive Income Setup — Earn While You Sleep
What: Set up at least one revenue stream that doesn't require daily effort. Automated newsletter, recurring subscription, or evergreen lead magnet funnel.
Why: Everything you've done so far requires active effort — posting, emailing, outreach. That's fine for a sprint, but it doesn't compound. A $5/month newsletter that grows through referrals earns while you're doing other things. An evergreen lead magnet funnel that captures emails and upsells to the paid product runs without you touching it. Passive income isn't "do nothing and get rich." It's "build once, earn repeatedly."
The simplest passive income structure: curate useful content weekly, deliver it automatically, and charge for a premium tier. Example setup: a weekly automated digest (5 curated items with short reviews), sent to a Substack or Kit list every Tuesday. The curation takes 30 minutes/week or can be partially scripted. The funnel: free lead magnet → email signup → free newsletter for 2 weeks → pitch the paid tier. Even 10 paid subscribers at $5/month = $50/month, which covers API costs with room to spare.
Passive income by experiment type:
- Newsletter Ghost-Operator: Your entire experiment IS a passive income play — the client pays monthly, you deliver weekly. Set up templates, voice guides, and workflows so each issue takes less time. The efficiency gain is your margin.
- Etsy digital products: Evergreen listings + SEO = passive traffic. Add a "related products" section to each listing. Set up an email capture on your Etsy shop link for upselling.
- Agency/service: Create a productized version of your most-requested service. Instead of custom work, offer a fixed-scope deliverable at a fixed price.
- Micro-software/Claw Mart skill: The product itself is passive once listed. Add an email sequence that nurtures leads from your free content to the paid tool.
- Any other experiment: Ask: what part of what I do could run without daily effort? Automate that piece.
Audit checklist:
- Have you identified your passive income format?
- Is there an automated delivery mechanism?
- Is there an evergreen signup path (people can find it without you actively promoting)?
- Does the free → paid conversion path exist?
- Have you tested the automation end-to-end?

## Passive Income Stream
### Format (pick one):
□ Automated newsletter — weekly/biweekly curated content, paid tier
□ Recurring subscription — ongoing access to updated resource
□ Evergreen funnel — lead magnet → email sequence → paid product
□ Affiliate/referral — earn from recommending tools you actually use
□ Template library — growing collection, one-time or subscription access
### What it is:
[One sentence description]
### How it earns without daily effort:
[Explain the automation — what's scripted, what's scheduled, what runs itself]
### Signup path:
[How does someone find this without you actively promoting it today?]
Evergreen sources:
- Lead magnet still being downloaded → email sequence → pitch
- Community posts from Days 8-24 still visible → profile link → signup
- Product listing on Claw Mart / Gumroad → referral traffic
### Free → Paid conversion:
Step 1: [Free thing — lead magnet, free newsletter tier, sample]
Step 2: [Trust-building — 2-3 free emails showing value]
Step 3: [Pitch — clear offer with price and link]
### Setup tasks:
- [ ] Create the automated delivery (email sequence, cron, scheduled posts)
- [ ] Write the free → paid conversion sequence (3-5 emails)
- [ ] Connect the lead magnet to the sequence
- [ ] Test the full journey: signup → free content → pitch → buy
- [ ] Set and forget — verify it runs without intervention
### Revenue projection:
[Be honest, not optimistic]
- If 5% of email list converts to paid: [list size × 0.05 × price] = $[X]/month
- If 1 new signup/week at $5/month: $20/month after 4 weeks
- Break-even on API costs at [X] paid subscribers
The evergreen email sequence:
Email 1 (immediately after signup): Deliver the lead magnet. One sentence
about who you are. No pitch.
Email 2 (Day 3): Share a useful tip related to the lead magnet topic.
Something they couldn't get from the lead magnet alone. No pitch.
Email 3 (Day 5): Tell the story of building your product. What problem
you saw, what you built, what results it got. Light pitch: "If this
sounds useful, here's the link: [URL]"
Email 4 (Day 7): Direct pitch. "I built [product] for people who
[have this problem]. It costs $[X] and [what they get]. Here's the
link: [URL]. If it's not for you, no worries — you'll keep getting
[the free content]."
The Audience-to-Ownership Pipeline
Marketplaces give you buyers. Email gives you ownership. The pipeline:
- Marketplace listing → someone discovers your product through Gumroad/Etsy/Claw Mart's built-in traffic
- Lead magnet or free version → they join your email list in exchange for something valuable
- Email sequence → you nurture them with genuine value (not just "buy my stuff")
- Repeat purchase → they buy your next product because they already trust you
This is Kevin Kelly's "1,000 True Fans" in practice. You don't need millions of visitors. You need 50 people who buy everything you make. The email list is how you keep them. Marketplaces rent you attention. Email lets you own the relationship.
If you have an email list from Day 8, this is where it starts paying off. Set up a simple 3-email welcome sequence: (1) deliver the free thing, (2) share one genuinely useful insight, (3) introduce your paid product. That's it. Don't overthink it.
What goes wrong:
- Over-engineering the automation. A simple email sequence beats a complex funnel that never gets finished. Start with 4 emails and iterate.
- Not connecting the free resources to the paid product. Your lead magnets are still getting downloads. If they don't lead somewhere, those downloads are wasted.
- Setting up a subscription without enough value to justify recurring payment. A $5/month newsletter needs to save someone at least 30 minutes/month. What's the value exchange?
- Forgetting to test the automation. Set it up, sign up with a test email, verify every step fires correctly.
Human input: Automated email sequences may need the human to set up on their email platform (Kit, Substack, Mailchimp). Flag with specifics: "I've written a 4-email sequence. Can you set it up in [platform] as an automation triggered by [lead magnet signup]? Here are the emails." Give them the copy.
📦 No CLI Track: Write the email sequence. Your human sets up the automation in the email platform. If you're on Substack, the free → paid tier is built in. Draft everything so your human only needs to copy-paste and schedule.
💸 Experiment block:
- Task: Set up one passive income stream with automated delivery and a free → paid conversion path.
- Output file:
context/passive-income-setup.mdwith format, automation, and conversion path documented - Done when: Passive income stream is set up and tested. Evergreen signup path exists. Free → paid conversion sequence is live. Automation verified.
Done when: One passive income stream is set up and running. The free → paid conversion path is tested. Automation is verified. Something is earning (or ready to earn) without your daily intervention.
Distribution component: Connect your existing lead magnets to the new passive funnel. Every lead magnet download should now flow into the email sequence that eventually pitches the paid product. Update the lead magnets if needed.
